This project investigates how microplastics affect the physiology of coccolithophores, the most abundant calcifying microalgae in the ocean. We aim to determine whether microplastics are internalized by coccolithophores and assess their potential to disrupt calcification processes, including changes in coccolith morphology and structural integrity. Understanding these interactions is crucial for evaluating the impact of plastic pollution on marine carbon sequestration and biogeochemical cycles.
